3D scanning for elite sports
Thanks to reverse engineering, the founder of Finest Composite, a microbusiness specialising in the manufacturing of high-performance kayaking equipment, switched from hand making to industrial production in order to manufacture his paddle blades.
Alan Dollo, a kayaker performing in the French 1 stdivision and founder of Finest Composite knows that, in elite sports, every detail matters. After a two-year post-secondary diploma in the design of industrial products and a three-year vocational degree in plastics engineering and composite materials, the young sportsman decided to take up a new challenge and started to design and manufacture paddles intended for amateur and high-level kayak polo players. Based in Pau (France), he asked Cetim Sud-Ouest to carry out the Reverse Engineering of his first competition paddle (fully hand-made), named “Wave”.
From the cloud to the machine tool
After they completed the scanning of the blade, Cetim’s experts converted the point cloud obtained into a CAD file that can be used with any machine tool. Moreover, this operation allowed Alan Dolloto eliminate all the small surface defects that are invisible to the naked eye and to better manage the epoxy resin and carbon thicknesses so as to obtain better products and achieve constant quality. The next step will see the beginning of the serial production of blades with a brand new machine tool.

Mechatronics is for products and equipments as well. It deals with an integrated method to design, validate and manufacture functions which performances are guaranteed by an optimal assembly of various components (mechanical, electrical, electronical and data processing ones).
In the field of control and measurement, improvements are mainly found in the fields of production system management and real-time adjustment in order to guarantee product quality. There is also the development of via-Internet management of production machines, so that one machine can be shared by various industrials.
This technological focus includes projects relating to : mechatronical design, process and product automation and monitoring, measurement control, maintenance and monitoring of operating machines.
