Summary of construction site noise action
Of all the noise nuisances cited by people, particularly in urban areas, those generated by public works are often at the top of the list in terms of annoyance, exacerbated by several factors including that inherent in the contractors who, for economic reasons, tend to reduce construction work periods, thereby increasing the pace, and therefore the noise. These activities are therefore strictly regulated, on one hand by municipalities, on the other hand by directives passed at European level, comprising various regulatory constraints, including the one of primary interest to them, the “Outdoor” directive 2000/14 EC. In order to deal with these various obligations and to quantify as closely as possible the noise emissions emitted by equipment on a construction site, to know whether reduction would have a positive impact on the nuisance caused, the manufacturers questioned Cetim. This study therefore brings together all projects already carried out to add to knowledge and including among others: a reminder of the different regulatory constraints; the elements used to distinguish “machine noise” and “process noise”; a study (9Q401) on back-up vehicle alarms; a summary of the first tests carried out on acoustic imaging, with a list of results from various construction sites – road, urban drilling, recycling site.
