Heat treatment quality control: the RQP1 is now a standard
The RQP1 (process quality recommendations) written by Cetim at the request of the French union of surface treatment industries (UITS) has become Standard NF A 02‑053. This standard covers the audit and inspection of integrated or subcontractor heat treatment workshops working for the automobile sector. This reference document is a less expense alternative to the American reference document.
Standard NF A 02-53 – Heat treatment quality control – is an assessment reference which is to be integrated into the quality system of any heat treatment workshop. It was written based on Cetim’s recommendation RQP1 and developed in collaboration with prime contractors and suppliers belonging mainly to the automobile sector.
The criteria dealt with by this standard cover the entire heat treatment process, from pre‑treatment to inspection of finished parts. The requirements and recommendations related to cross-functional aspects (organisation, management, quality management, etc.) and technical aspects (temperature and thermal cycle, salt baths, cooling, finishing, etc.) are identified and specified. As a result, this standard makes it possible to perform a complete evaluation of the heat treatment workshop and to list all corrective actions.
The appendices give recommendations as to the required level of accuracy and the maintenance of the measuring equipment, in addition to examples of marking charts.
This reference document is a less expensive alternative to the American reference document, however it sets appropriate quality objectives. France will soon ask the ISO/TC 244 technical committee “Industrial furnaces and associated equipment” to transform this French standard into an international standard.
