Video: cryogenic machining comes to Le Bourget

Cryogenic machining will be on display from 19 to 25 June 2017 at the Paris International Air Show in Le Bourget (France). Watch the video about this technology on the Cetim France YouTube channel.

A world first! At the Paris Air Show to be held in Le Bourget from 19 to 25 June 2017, the industrial manufacturer Mecachrome will announce the start of series cryogenic machining of titanium for November 2017. An initial machining centre equipped with its patented technology for the liquid nitrogen cooling of the cutting zone, at temperatures close to -200°C, must be installed on its Evora site in Portugal, to conduct full machining of a titanium part for the Leap engine. The manufacturer plans to invest approximately 30 million Euros to roll out this breakthrough technology on other sites and on other engine or structural parts.

Continued developments in France

Mecachrome’s initiative runs concurrently with developments around this technology that are underway in France, in particular at Cetim. One such example is the liquid nitrogen-assisted milling demonstrator that was unveiled to the public during the Intercut days held on February 1 and 2, 2017 in Senlis (France). This demonstrator stems from the initial results of the Dry To Fly project, spearheaded by Mecachrome in partnership with Cetim, Cirtes, Evatec Tools, Inori SAS, Missler Software and MPM. The project which was launched in 2015 is aimed at lowering production costs of large-dimension parts for the aerospace, energy and transport sectors by over 30%. To this end, it is focused on three new avenues, namely preparation of material with an innovative 3D cutting system, new machining strategies with elimination of CAM, replaced with stratodesign algorithms and adaptive control, in addition to cryogenic assistance of machining.

In order to maximise the benefits of this technology, greater understanding of the mechanisms at play in this process is required. This is one of the two goals of another project, backed by AMICS-E&PI, the professional association of machining, manufacturers of special machines and process equipment, and conducted by Cetim with three other partners of the Intercut Network consortium (Cetim, Cetim-Ctdec, Enise, Arts & Métiers ParisTech).

Studies are underway and are yielding results. Cetim’s demonstrator has already been used to carry out full machining in the aeronautical sector. Images of machining operations can be found in a video available on the Cetim France YouTube channel and on our website, in the “Videos” section.
