A field action for machining sludge recovery
What to do with machining sludge? How can this sludge be recovered? These are the questions that the founders of the Valbom project (recovery of machining sludge in the metallurgical sector) are trying to answer. A sludge recovery channel and standardisation work is in progress.
France produces 50,000 tons of machining sludge per year, but only 20% of this significant quantity (containing 60% of metal) are re-injected into production. In other words, this is a huge waste and an obvious source of economic wealth which is just waiting to be tapped. Hence the idea of creating a sustainable channel for metallurgical recovery of machining sludge which would simultaneously involve sludge producers, companies specialising in sludge processing (compacting, briquetting) and steelmakers likely to use this sludge.
The project, funded by Ademe and labelled by the Viaméca and Team 2 competitiveness clusters, gathers SFH, Defontaine Group, SKF, ArcelorMittal, SNF Floerger, NTN SNR, CTIF and Cetim. It is aimed at guaranteeing the traceability of the briquettes which are to be recovered, developing briquetting technologies and defining economic and organisational models for this recovery channel.
A technical data sheet has been issued to guarantee the quality and traceability of the briquettes. It makes it possible to compare the characteristics of the briquettes with the specifications issued by steelmakers and casting suppliers.
To date, several meetings have been held with the stakeholders involved, in order to validate the models and ensure the willingness and commitment of the partners, and work is in progress to integrate the briquettes to the European steel scrap specification. Further actions are under way to collect and recover machining sludge in the various French regions.
