XXL structural calculations by Promill.
Checking the fatigue resistance of a giant structure with a length of 20 m, a diameter of 4.5 m and a mass of 51 tons, for a spent wheat grain drying unit for a bio-ethanol production system required to operate 24/7, for at least 20 years! This is indeed the serious challenge which has been entrusted to Cetim by Promill. In order to expand its operations in North America, the entity managing the drying and granulation activities of the Moret Industries group has launched a development process for a new range of single-pass rotary tube drying units for spent grain, with outstanding dimensions. By using Abaqus Standard software, a finite element computing code, and integrating static and dynamic limitations, as well as the critical points of the set-up, Cetim experts validated the characteristics of the material required for the satisfactory operation of the shell and improved the life cycle of the overall system. This test was doubly successful for Promill, which also managed to validate the use of a specialized sub-contractor for activities which are not an integral part of its core business.
