X-Raybot: the automated and portable diffractometer
Cetim and MRX have jointly developed a new X-ray diffractometer for the in-situ assessment of the residual stresses of metallic parts.
The two companies have stepped up to the challenge of transforming the conventional X-ray diffractometer into a simple, compact, portable and automated tool called X-Raybot which radically lessens measurement times and costs. Up until now, the devices were heavy and cumbersome especially due to the water cooling system of the X-ray tube. The major innovation of this machine is precisely related to this tube as it is now air-cooled. Gone are the pipes and the connection requirements as well as the noise produced by cooling.
Supported by a 6-axis robot
Another innovative aspect is the choice made to use a robotised cell in the form of an arm that swivels along 6 axes to perform all the movements of the device and position the reading head. In this way, the machine covers 10 to 15 reading points on a part and maps its stresses, irrespective of its shape. Furthermore, the robot is lighter than the axes systems conventionally used. The quality of the detector developed in Switzerland for synchrotrons should also be highlighted.
In the end, two to three minutes are all that is needed to perform the measurements that take 15 to 20 minutes with conventional devices. The X-Raybot is delivered with two suitcase-sized carrying cases that have been approved by air authorities. This makes it possible to move very quickly to respond to emergencies for example and reduces the costs of the service. The product was released in September 2015.
