The module of the high-speed composite pilot line receives an award

The Quilted Stratum Process (QSP) ply layup module, designed by Cetim for the high‑speed composite pilot line, was granted a “JEC Innovation Award”. The award ceremony will take place during the JEC Americas exhibition in Houston, Texas, in June 2015.

The Quilted Stratum Process (QSP) module, funded with 4.8 million Euros from Cetim and the Pays de la Loire Region, is a composite part layup module. It is now integrated into the high-speed composite pilot line installed in the Technocampus Composites in Nantes (France) made in cooperation with the IRT Jules Verne. The QSP is based on a patented technology developed with three French mechanical engineering companies specialising in production processes: PEI Pinette, Compose and Loiretech. The process also benefits from common work carried out with Onera.

The Quilted Stratum Process provides “net shape” parts, ready for assembly, and constitutes a new approach for more efficient design and production of thermoplastic and multi-material composite parts. It took two years to design and develop the automated production line which is now available for the development and production of mechanical parts for the automobile and aerospace industries, in mass production conditions, with stringent quality and reliability requirements and at an overall competitive cost. The line is now ready to develop the first prototypes.

The “JEC Innovation Award” given in the “Process” category recognises the innovation of this process which enables the production of parts with variable thicknesses and customised multi-layer directions and the use of multi-fibre and polymer materials from hybrid pultruded strips. It also allows production cycles from 40 to 90 seconds including the manufacturing of the preform and the heating, transfer and thermoforming / over-moulding operations, for large production volumes.
