Temperature-resistant polymers
“Bakelite”, a phenol formaldehyde resin, is used to make culinary items, but it has one major shortcoming: it is a thermosetting polymer that becomes irreversibly solid once heated, which means it cannot be recycled. Cetim’s “Culinary Items” professional committee therefore commissioned the Centre to identify recyclable substitution materials and specify their definition and properties, such as their maximum temperature for use or their resistance to fire. The inventory was made of two major categories of polymers resistant to temperatures that are at least identical to that of bakelite: thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers. A dozen materials likely to be viable alternatives were identified.
