Random failure of sheet metal forming tools: recommendations for threaded fastening

Cetim has carried out a study of the problem related with “random failure” of sheet metal forming tools and more specifically that of the failure of threaded connections included in the active parts of these tools. The study was intended for the sheet metal forming industry. The study reviews the threaded fastening mechanisms and the main damaging modes of threaded fasteners as well as the methods for limiting them: bolt flexibility, compression cone concept, filtering of the punch force, selection of the bolts and the preloading, consideration of friction, etc. This summary also includes the rules and recommendations to be followed for optimum threaded fastening and features two application case examples.
