CAM intelligence and characterization for mould makers
Machining programming, or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), software is improving continuously. However, for the programmers using it, the benefits of its new functions are not always evident at first glance. The Cetim “Mould makers” trade committee consequently initiated an action intended to determine the benefits of the new features as a function of the types of mould to be machined. Cetim conducts a yearly survey of CAM software publishers through B2B and trade show meetings. It then carries out tests to characterize the most relevant functional features, such as new machining strategies, new cutting tools necessitating specific programming, or optimization of existing pathways. This new study examined nine CAM software suites. The programming and machining tests covered “circular arc” cutting tools and a deep/narrow cut strategy. The results showed significant productivity gains, with machining time savings of up to 50%.
