A recurrent concern in the design and safety analysis of packaging for the transport of radioactive material is to characterize the leak tightness of elastomeric O-rings at low and high temperatures. Indeed, the literature and most gasket suppliers specify minimum and maximum allowable temperatures but they do not specify the kind of fluid which is concerned, the associated leak rate, the seal life of the O-rings at these temperatures and how these minimum and maximum temperatures are determined. Based on this type of data, it is difficult to guarantee the leak tightness of O-rings submitted to fluctuating temperatures for radioactive material transport applications.
