The aim of this study is to determine the influence of different annealing treatments (before and after forging) on the turning and hobbing machinability of cold forged gearbox shafts made of 27MnCr5 steel.
For this, two procedures of pre cold forging annealing and three procedures of post cold forging annealing have been studied (6 different configurations with 200 cams per configuration). The turning machinability has been analysed according to some criteria such as the chip morphology, the tool wear, the dimension control and the surface condition.
The differences in machinability performances are associated with the microstructure. The study highlights the influence of annealing (before forging) on the turning and hobbing machinability.
