Material fatigue - Factors influencing the fatigue strength of metal of metal materials

As fatigue failure is the main cause of in-service failure, it quickly became apparent that it was vital to support mechanical engineering companies with designing components for their machinery. In 1980, with this in mind, Cetim published a work on fatigue data, Données technologiques sur la fatigue, offering a practical summary of the state of the art at the time. However, much has changed in the past 40 years, in terms of knowledge and the technical environment, as well as the economy and competition. Design offices therefore require simple, reliable and rapid design methods that can be combined with the use of software. Other factors also play an important role. Indeed, current demands in terms of the reliability of machines and mechanical structures make it necessary to obtain as exhaustive as possible an understanding of the physical phenomena in play. This new booklet in the Fatigue collection (9Q414), following some key reminders about fatigue strength, aims to review current knowledge by taking a close look at the most important factors, namely metallurgical and mechanical factors (geometry, loading and residual stresses), as well as those linked to the environment. Wherever possible, these factors are quantified based on the experience acquired, with a view to their integration into a fatigue design method.
