With Sherloc, the Quilted Stratum Process (QSP) is put to test in the aeronautics sector
Cetim was selected to manufacture five composite aircraft window frame demonstrators as part of the Sherloc European project. These parts and the first results will be displayed in an exclusive presentation during the JEC World2019 trade fair.
First the car manufacturing sector and now the aeronautics sector! Within the Sherloc European project (Structural Health Monitoring, Manufacturing and Repair Technologies for Life Management of Composite Fuselage), Cetim proves that it is now possible to make composite parts for the aeronautics sector at production rates and cost levels that are compatible with series production. Demonstrators will be displayed on Cetim’s booth during the JEC World 2019 exhibition. A video showing the manufacturing of these demonstrators is available on the Cetim France YouTube channel. Moreover, on the 12 thof March, from 9:55 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., Cetim will hold a conference to present the results of this work.
Mass produced windows
Initiated in 2015 and scheduled to end in 2022, the Sherloc project is part of the Clean Sky 2 programme (the biggest aviation research programme ever launched at the European scale) and aims to develop and assess non-destructive testing techniques which can be used to monitor the aging of composite parts of medium-haul aircraft. To that end and as part of a sub‑project named Sherloc QSP, Cetim was selected by the Imperial College of London (the Sherloc project coordinator) to design and produce five demonstrators of aircraft window frame made of PEEK and carbon fibre, and skin fuselage assemblies wich will be bench tested during SHM campaigns. Therefore, the window frames are produced using Cetim’s high-speed thermostamping process, named Quilted Stratum Process (QSP), and bonded to a fuselage skin. The advantage of this process is that it makes it possible to obtain “Net Shape” parts right from the thermostamping step, that is to say parts without the need for any finishing operation. The production cycle is also considerably faster than that of conventional processes, to the point that making 40,000 parts per year and per production line seems to be possible.
Window demonstrators will be on display on our booth (No. D85 – hall 6) during the “JEC World 2019 exhibition from 12 to 14 March 2019 in Paris-Nord Villepinte” and our experts will welcome to present “a comprehensive offer for composite materials for the aviation sector”.

Mechatronics is for products and equipments as well. It deals with an integrated method to design, validate and manufacture functions which performances are guaranteed by an optimal assembly of various components (mechanical, electrical, electronical and data processing ones).
In the field of control and measurement, improvements are mainly found in the fields of production system management and real-time adjustment in order to guarantee product quality. There is also the development of via-Internet management of production machines, so that one machine can be shared by various industrials.
This technological focus includes projects relating to : mechatronical design, process and product automation and monitoring, measurement control, maintenance and monitoring of operating machines.
