Silence is priceless for Air Liquide Healthcare.
The teams of Air Liquide Medical Systems, a subsidiary of Air Liquide Healthcare, leave nothing to chance when they develop sleep improving devices. During the design of a new device, named Vendom (a French acronym for home ventilation), they had a new ally: acoustic simulation. The first version of Vendom, tested by Cetim, featured a sound power level of 40 dB(A), i.e. 10 dB(A) above the defined objectives. Air Liquide Medical Systems then completely redesigned its device. A hybrid vibro-acoustic model, comprised of a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and a Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), made it possible to virtually assess the relevance of the proposed modifications while taking the constraints of the studied concept into account (overall dimensions, pressure losses, weight of the device, etc.) and led to the validation of the technical choices. After user tests were carried out to identify other areas for improvement, Air Liquide Medical Systems conducted psycho-acoustic surveys involving listening to the ventilation and a search for tonal criteria and was finally able to optimise its device.
