QMF project: a successful, high precision collaboration.

With the QMFProject, a technical centre, an industrial manufacturer and a research laboratory shared their competences and carried out a large-scale project! In order to create a high precision micro-engineering solution for the Hubert Curienmulti-disciplinary institute (IPHC, a mixed research unit under the joint supervision of CNRSand University of Strasbourg), Satt Conectus, a company specialising in technology transfer acceleration, contacted Cetim andMicrorectif, anindustrial company. The objective of the project was to design the technological core of a new model of quadrupole mass analyser for a gas analysis mass spectrometer: the Quadrupole Mass Filter (QMF).

CNRS, Satt Conectus, Cetim’s technical teams based in Cluses(France) and Mircrorectifworked in close cooperation for 12 months to design this essential technological component: a mechanical assembly with a diameter of 100 mm and a length of 400 mm, comprised of approximately twenty assembled components with dimensional and geometrical tolerances less than 5 µm on the final product! And all this taking into account the industrial and economic reality.

The final product is the result of a close collaboration between the designer and the manufacturer, such a collaboration being critical when starting from a barely patented technological concept (TRL2 stage) with the aim to achieve an operational demonstrator (TRL7 stage). The work method applied by Cetim was successful: an objective assessment of the risks at each step to keep the development loops to a minimum, and constant work aiming at an industrial process rather than a prototype process.
