Predicting Sound Quality of an automotive HVAC using Acoustic Synthesis

The sound quality of an automotive HVAC is evaluated using psycho-acoustic descriptors, law of merit and sound samples. To provide narrow bands spectrum considering several design options, the approach of the acoustic synthesis has been chosen as it allows the virtual prototyping of a mechanical system. A preliminary study identifies the substructures such as components (fan, flap and heat exchanger) or geometries having an influence on the noise. The aero-acoustic characterization of the noise sources and transfer functions is carried out based on experimental methods. The interaction effects between the components have been taken into account. The integration of the acoustic synthesis in a simulation tool helps to raise awareness the designer about the impact of his conception choices on the acoustic performance.
