Lubricating power of pumped fluids: Phase 1 – Scope of application of ASTM G-133 standard
For the purpose of answering manufacturers' questions about the lubricating power of pumped fluids, with the aim of finding optimal dimensions for rotor/stator contacts and dynamic sealing devices, an initial study has been conducted into coefficients of friction with food products. The promising results from these tests led the working group to decide to undertake further tests, in a phase that looked at the pairings of materials, acidity of products used and in particular the temperature, a precise method calling for additional work on some pairings of materials, such as 316L/Acteon, 316L/316L GS cast iron/GL cast iron and ceramic/ceramic, which were also subject to electrochemical potential measurements in order to better determine the mechanisms of passivation layer formation. Although the tests performed with vinegar, water and bicarbonate of soda gave encouraging results, they did not provide a full understanding of the depassivation and repassivation mechanisms on friction and therefore require further research (S2038) in collaboration with electrochemistry specialists.
