Bibliographic study on crack sizing by infrared thermography

Different methods allow professionals from the sheet metal working sector, as well as all service providers concerned, to carry out surface tests on parts whose conformity must comply with acceptance criteria. However, in the case of surface tests performed using methods such as penetrant testing or magnetic particle testing, sizing is always restricted to the length and type of the indications while an essential piece of data is ignored, namely the crack height, equivalent to the crack depth for surface-breaking cracks. However, these professionals absolutely need to obtain exhaustive and reliable dimensional data which can be used, on the one hand, to confirm the need for repairs as well as the conditions of said repairs as applicable and, on the other hand, as input data for fracture mechanics calculations. Two processes which can substitute for magnetic particle testing and penetrant testing were studied: conventional eddy current testing and/or Eddy Current Array (ECA) testing (covered by a study the results of which will be published later) and active infrared thermography, presented in this document (9Q417) in the form of a bibliographic study which defines the state of the art of knowledge and work on the depth sizing of surface-breaking cracks
in metallic materials.
