Warm forming of aluminium – Characterisation of two materials
The aluminium hot forming technique is a highly promising process, which ultimately might not only give companies an advantage over the competition but also allow them to enter new markets. However, given the difficulty in working “hard” aluminium alloys, an alernative process has emerged: warm forming. Since this technique requires specialist knowledge and expertise, the Blanking & Deep Drawing Trade Committee initiated a cycle of studies a few years ago, which gave rise to a demonstration model with encouraging results that prompted the Commission to test it on two new grades studied here, 2024 T3 and 7075 T6, with equally encouraging results: the good performance of these two alloys under heating demonstrated the possibility of press forming them without losing their original mechanical characteristics, and with a significant increase in springback.
