Variable cutting clearance
Industrial punching faces the problem of tool wear in control of forming processes, and this has become a leading preoccupation. Many companies would like a solution that would enable them to increase their productivity while improving the quality of parts produced. While some of them work to adjust cutting clearance to the shape to be cut, there is no specifically defined rule for correct application of this process. This study (S2032) therefore establishes a method for selecting cutting clearance values based on a simplification process involving breaking parts down in order to isolate each corner and radius and apply a suitable clearance. Consecutive analysis of the parts under two wear modes and analytical calculations performed with a simulator were used to determine recommendations for the clearance values to be applied with regard to the wear risk, and are presented in an initial table for HC380LA, X2CrNi18-09 and 3003 H16 materials.
