Surface preparation before deposition on aluminium

Traditionally, the surface preparation of aluminium alloys prior to electroplating is implemented using “zincateˮ processes, which require expertise and rigorous technical monitoring. Processes such as copper-plating and nickel-plating, widely used on surface treatment lines, would go some way to simplifying this issue. Several treatments were tested in this study with a nitrate-free and fluoride-free surface preparation and on different alloys, and deposit adhesion was tested using the grid cross-cutting method, thermal shock at 220°C and bending. Two processes stood out from the rest: phosphoric anodic oxidation and nickel sulphamate. Nickel sulphamate would be workable, but only if confirmed by further testing. (S2028)
