Pump diagnostics based on analysis of electrical measurements
This document (9Q391) provides an overview of numerous studies conducted in recent years relating to the development of diagnostic techniques centred on pump motor power currents. In the late 1990’s, Cetim was asked to develop a pump monitoring technology for use in installations that were often hard to access, due to being underwater or geographically remote, for example. Where no operator physically was present to check that equipment was operating correctly, this monitoring came into its own, both from a maintenance perspective and in terms of the ability to detect faults liable to cause failures. In view of the compelling results of the study conducted at the time, which focussed on machine vibrations, other studies were subsequently carried out, most notably to develop a diagnostic technique using motor power supply electric currents, which proved to be easily implemented, non-invasive and suitable for remote operation. In 2014, a working group made up of centrifugal and positive-displacement pump manufacturers was set up to analyse the results of the various studies and test the techniques developed. The group thoroughly examined the detection methods and the results achieved using centrifugal and positive-displacement pumps, including gear, eccentric rotor, rotary piston and multicellular pumps.
