Practical guide to distortions in welding
Welding is a vital process in the manufacturing of many mechanical structures and is often not only a simple operation that can be performed last, but also a key operation for perfecting a structure. Under the effect of physical and metallurgical phenomena, issues may appear after welding, such as a reduction in piece length, bending, or angular distortion. These problems are increasingly present in an economic context characterised by declining thickness in order to reduce the weight and cost, but therefore also the stiffness, of structures, which has a direct impact on their fatigue strength. To mitigate these problems, these factors need to be considered right from the design phase, with welding addressed as an integral part of the process. This practical guide (9Q378) for technicians and engineers includes a detailed presentation of the phenomena at work when distortion occurs and presents a range of solutions in order to reduce it.
