Practical guide for design office use on the application of weld symbols taking account of mechanical component fatigue

This practical guide (9Q394) for the exclusive use of design offices has one major ambition:to make them aware that the dimensioning of weld beads can be a major factor during manufacture and so have a definite technical and economic impact. This impact is evaluated here using a method based on time (speed of finishing, positioning and inspection) and the material resources, and illustrated in a table by means of examples. While several welded component fatigue studies have shown the benefit of preferring large weld toe transition radii and an increased depth of penetration, these recommendations must nonetheless be balanced. The authors of this guide wished to illustrate their arguments in a simple but comprehensive way. They therefore took as their starting point questions to which they have provided clear answers: why dimension a weld bead? What are the parameters that influence the geometry of a weld bead? What are the methods for changing the surface geometry after welding?
