Non-structural adhesive bonding
The public works sector is currently faced with a major problem: the high stresses experienced in operation by the equipment it uses every day. These can cause failures which might then require numerous and costly after sales repairs and result in downtime of the equipment concerned. These stressed occur in particular in the structural components of the equipment, such as booms and arms, the supports of which are fitted by screwing to welded plates, a technique that creates hot spots. The problem therefore consists in finding an alternative assembly technology that, in addition, can be carried out by a subcontractor used by many companies. The working group concerned opted for the adhesive bonding technique, which has the advantage of eliminating this risk of failure, as well as achieving cost savings on assembly operations. This report (9Q384), which is a compilation of all the studies carried out, presents all the actions undertaken by the working group. These included the definition of the documentation necessary for subcontracting the development of an adhesively bonded assembly. They also included the study of two systems (metal-to-metal and metal-to-composite), comprising the identification of suitable adhesive bonding systems, the laboratory qualification of the selected systems for each application, the definition and the realisation of a representative prototype, the testing phase and the monitoring of the behaviour of the prototype.
