Metal additive manufacturing

From its initial development in the 1980s, additive manufacturing (AM), has made considerable advances. It is now used for producing prototype parts, for tools and as a manufacturing process in its own right. But AM in the long term there is no doubt that additive manufacturing will come to take up a permanent place as part of the supply of manufacturing process solutions and will have a major impact on the mechanical engineering industry.

The advent of additive manufacturing opened the door to concepts (design, services) that had previously been impossible to envisage. A multitude of different dreams and fantasies rushed to take advantage of this new process. Imagining it already taking the place of older processes, speeding up profit and productivity. But, it has to be said, the industrial reality is very different. Particularly for metal additive manufacturing where the investment and manufacturing costs still represent a major obstacle to the expansion of these technologies.

Clearly it is necessary to have a good level of knowledge of the existing processes, their constraints and specific features, in order to be able to make informed choices concerning additive manufacturing.

You will find out about in this report (3H02) on the main technologies available and their applications. Considering the whole of the value chain, design, manufacturing, post-processing, control, security and standardisation.
