ISO dimensioning – Release of the new Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) Handbook!
In 2017 and 2018, the standards on ISO dimensioning and Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) were updated. Cetim has released a new version of its “ISO dimensioning – GPS Specification” handbook incorporating ISO 1101:2017 and ISO 5458:2018 in order to provide industrial manufacturers with the assurance of their compliance with these standards.
A graphical “language”
Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) is a means of communication used by designers, production engineers, quality specialists, inspectors and metrologists to exchange unambiguous information on the permissible geometries of mechanical parts via the use of specifications (dimensional, geometric and surface condition) provided on drawings. The syntax and semantics of the associated graphic and symbolic “language” are defined in GPS standards.
This Handbook outlines the rules for using this language and the latest changes made to the main elements contained in the basic dimensioning and tolerancing standards. The 2018 version therefore includes the two most recent publications: ISO 1101:2017 “Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) - Geometrical tolerancing - Tolerances of form, orientation, location and run-out” and ISO 5458:2018 “Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) - Geometrical tolerancing – Pattern and combined geometrical specification”.
This Handbook was written by Cetim in collaboration with the UNM (the French standardisation office for the mechanical engineering industries) with support from the FIM (the French federation of mechanical engineering industries), Cetim-Ctdec, Cetim Centre-Val de Loire, Cetim Grand Est, the LRCCP (the rubber and plastic research and testing laboratory), Artema and Symop.
The English version of the handbook will be available in September 2018 and a German version is scheduled for late 2018.

This concept relies on all methods and technologies which care for their impact on the environment throughout a product or process life. Though reluctances due to, among others, legal constraints and potentially reduced commercial leeway, sustainable development is certainly a real opportunity for innovation.
This technological focus includes projects relating to : Environment and industrial risk management in order to anticipate compliance to regulations, implementation of eco-design approaches and technologies reducing the environmental impact of processes and products.
