Carnot Institutes: 10 years of success
The Carnot Institute network celebrated its ten-year anniversary on 23 September 2015. This was an opportunity to discover or rediscover many demonstrators resulting from partner research with industry.
The Carnot Institutes are 10 years old! This young, but effective network, is composed of 34 institutes that give priority to partner research and accordingly carries out 55% of the R&D outsourced by companies to French public research institutions with only 15% of its workforce. Each year, it lends its expertise to some 2,000 companies, 900 of which are SMEs. During the ten-year anniversary celebration held on 23 September 2015 at the French National Library BNF, the institutes exhibited further proof of their achievements by showcasing 34 industrial demonstrators and products stemming from their joint work with industrial manufacturers.
Tangible demonstrations of research
One of these demonstrators put on display was an automatic vibratory drilling unit for multimaterial applications (composites-metal) in the aeronautics industry. It has been developed by the ARTS institute and AEI, a Spanish SME. This now mass-produced machine takes 10 times less time for drilling compared with current solutions. “Pack&Strat”, the quick stratodesign packaging process by ICEEL (Energy and environment Carnot institute in Lorraine) applies additive manufacturing technologies to the world of tailored packaging for single parts or products produced in very small quantities. Coreslam, the simultaneous mapping and location algorithm developed by the Mines institute, opens the way to independent machine operation.
Polymap, the rapid surface microgeometry measurement tool developed by the Mica institute, helps to study the self-healing capacity of certain polymers. With cycle times of 1 second and its ability to treat transparent and opaque surfaces, Polymap opens the way to in-line quality control applications for the automobile, watchmaking and aerospace sectors. Cirimat and Macaprotec Industries’ zinc-nickel codeposition process is also intended for the aerospace industry. It was qualified by several constructors and equipment manufacturers in this sector.
For its part, Ingenierie@Lyon worked with Elbi, an SME, on a compact, high performance and low maintenance roller screw type transmission. This technology provides an alternative to hydraulic actuators in the construction and public works, lifting, aerospace and renewable energies sectors.
The Cetim Carnot institute exhibited a two-arm robot that was used to demonstrate collaborative robotics. This easily customisable and programmable robot can move around in the workshop and is suited to mechanical engineering applications such as part handling, assembling, finishing and inspection. Within the context of the Capme’up robotics platform, it has now been made available to SMEs who would like to assess the interest of cobotics for their plants. The Capme’up programme is sponsored by the Carnot Cetim, CEA List and Ifpen Transports Énergie institutes and was initiated within the Investments of the Future programme.
