Video: femtosecond laser micro texturing of surfaces is operational
Following several years of development, the femtosecond laser of Manutech USD in Saint-Étienne, designed for the micro-texturing of surfaces, has been made available to industrial manufacturers. See the video of its performance here!
They’ve done it! All companies and laboratories now have access to Manutech USD’s femtosecond laser located in the High Technologies Building (BHT) in Saint-Étienne. This multi-beam machine, resulting from multi-wavelength lasers, is used for high speed texturing of multi-scale surfaces (0.1 µm to 100 µm). The associated optomechanical system consistently tracks the movements of the laser beam, without interruption at the time of impact with the material.
The interest of this new equipment is that it can be used inter alia to make a surface hydrophobic or hydrophilic; to reduce the drag or turbulence created by aircraft wings, turbine or wind turbine blades; to promote adherence or lubrication; to obtain an accurate sensorial “feel” of the material. These are topics that have been studied by many industrial manufacturers for many years.
Manutech USD (USD means Ultrafast Surface Design) is an Equipex (equipment of excellence) that evolved out of the Investments of the Future programme and is a joint collaborative endeavour of the École Centrale Lyon, Ireis, Jean Monnet University in Saint-Étienne, the École nationale supérieure des Mines, Énise and Cetim. Manutech USD works in close cooperation with Manutech Sise, the Laboratory of excellence (Labex) in surface engineering in the Rhône-Alpes region.
