Four pioneers report on additive manufacturing of implants
Tornier, Serf, Evolutis and Aston Medical took part in Fadiperf, a project for the additive manufacturing of implants. In a video, their managers explain how they worked with Cetim experts on a laser fusion machine for additive manufacturing used on a time-sharing basis and report on the results obtained.
It would be an understatement to say that they are satisfied! In the video, find out feedback about the Fadiperf operation, which brought together four medical device professionals to work on a same item of equipment, with such advantages as customisation of implants, surface improvement, as well as the reduction of manufacturing, logistic and surgical operation costs.
The project for additive manufacturing of tailor-made and functionalised implants (Fadiperf) was steered by Cetim and approved by the Viaméca and i-Care competitive clusters. Its aim was to assist orthopaedic implant manufacturers in learning how to use these new laser fusion technologies.
Another aim of the project, which brought together orthopaedic implant manufacturers (Aston Medical, Evolutis, Serf, Tornier) and research centres (École nationale supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne - ENSMSE, Énise, Cetim), was to provide companies with a shared additive manufacturing machine in order to promote the transfer of these new technologies.
The project, which was sponsored by the European Regional Development Funds (Feder) viathe Rhône-Alpes region and the conseil général de la Loire (county council), allowed manufacturers to gain insight into a new technology without investing in equipment.
Once completed, the Fadiperf project should open the way for a new programme called Orthopée.
