Christophe Sirugue believes that “the industry is essential for France”

In December 2016, in an interview featured in issue 236 of Cetim Infos, the Secretary of State for Industry to the Minister of Economy and Finance confirms the need to restore industry to a prominent position in the French economy.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance believes in industry and the major role that it has to play in the prosperity of France. In an interview as part of the “Rencontre” (encounters) page of the December 2016 issue 236 of Cetim Infos, Christophe Sirugue confirmed this: “there is no fatalism: by supporting our industry, we support the entire economy”. In this interview, the Secretary of State for Industry praised the actions initiated by the current government, for which “one of the first important effects is having put industry back into the public forum”. He describes an encouraging situation for France, with lower labour costs than in Germany and a lesser number of businesses closing down than those being incorporated. Above all, France is well armed to face the new challenges of the digital revolution and the ecological transition with a relevant national products and services, the high involvement of the Government and the European Union in terms of financing, an industrial fabric and a dynamic local ecosystem, in addition to “a genuine movement that has been implemented” towards the industry of the future.

Focusing efforts on SMEs and intermediate-sized enterprises

18 months after the creation of the Industry of the Future Alliance, “we are entering a phase of implementation of the industry of the future, explained Christophe Sirugue. Many initiatives are becoming a reality”. The Secretary of State mentioned in particular the Factory Lab innovation platform in Saclay, as well as the “Vitrine industrie du futur” (Industry of the Future showcase) labels. “The companies awarded the label exemplify the ability to modernise, become energy-efficient and adopt digital technology. These involve major corporations as well as intermediate, small and medium-sized enterprises, which prove that any process can be improved and that by optimising, digitising the various production phases, it is possible to create value”, he added.

The Secretary of State also stated that priority must be given to SMEs and intermediate-sized enterprises, “which have a greater need for modernisation”. This can be achieved inter alia by creating networks and synergies, working according to a sector-based approach, helping companies to export and adapting basic and continuing training to this new industrial dimension.
