“Rencontres 5.0” video – health: welcome to the era of customised prostheses
The age of standard prostheses is over! It is now possible to replace some parts of the human body in a customised manner! For example, take the true story of a mountain climber, told at the "Rencontres 5.0", the closing ceremony of the 50th anniversary of Cetim, on 5 July 2016 at Bercy (France). The talus (heel bone) of the climber was ejected out of his foot in an accident. Using data obtained from the patient himself, the Wright firm was able to design a customised implantable prosthesis, ideal for his foot.
The need for this option is widespread. "Wright supplies 1.5 million solutions such as this one every year", announced Thierry Manceau, Vice-President of the French-US firm. What are the main priorities for this "made-to-measure surgery"? "Reduce stock levels, which are high in this sector, and propose innovative solutions adapted to the different morphologies", replied Thierry Manceau. To achieve this, Wright used the metal additive manufacturing technology. "We used to be machine workers cutting materials", commented the Vice-President. Today, we are welding metal powder, transforming a 3D file into a customised finished part. What changes will this bring? "Anything is possible today", declared Thierry Manceau. However "we need everybody to work in synergy. Technology is only a means to an end. We additionally need all of our partners to work together, from start to finish".
This video is the last in a series of four videos. In each episode, two key players explain how industrial operators are facing the major priorities of the world of the future: Energy, supply, health and mobility. Check out this series on our website, under "videos" and on the Cetim France Youtube channel.
