ZoDrEx: a European project to use the heat stored underground

The European project ZoDrEx (Zonal Isolation, Drilling and Exploitation of Enhanced Geothermal System) sponsored by Geo-Energie Suisse and 10 partners from Germany, Denmark, Spain, France and Switzerland, including Cetim Grand Est and ÉS-Géothermie, a design office and deep geothermal energy operator, is aimed at enhancing the exploitation of a heat source stored very deep underground. This is a major issue as geothermal energy emits very little greenhouse gas, has a significant potential with regard to the large quantity of heat available underground and features an available source that is independent from the weather conditions.

With a three-year budget of 4.9 million Euros, the project is structured into three phases. The first phase focuses on the improvement of drilling methods, in particular those related to the hydraulic hammer technologies in the deviated wells, with the goal of increasing the work speed in the granite dead rock by 10-fold. The second relates to the stimulation operations, particularly the “staged stimulation”viathe implementation of isolation and segmentation techniques. The third area of focus, covered by Cetim Grand Est and ÉS-Géothermie, relates to enhancing the exploitation of geothermal plants and the qualification of the resulting impacts, such as gas emissions, effluents, noise in the facility, etc. Cetim Grand Est will especially study the high-temperature corrosion inhibitors for deep geothermal energy exploitation in aggressive environments. Within this context, the Centre will need an instrumented to perform corrosion-resistant electrochemical measurements up to temperatures of 300°C and at pressures of 200 bars, with the possibility of injecting carbon dioxide (CO 2), oxygen (O 2) and nitrogen (N 2).
