Ramp up in the warm forming of aluminium
It is now possible to form high precision aluminium parts at high rates! This was proven by a demonstrator developed by Cetim’s experts using the warm forming method. The process was created with support from Constellium (formerly Alcan Engineered Products), and is based on keeping the temperature of the material at 200°C during the part drawing operation in order to make it more malleable during the transformation. The press achieves a production rate of 30 strokes per minute!
The technology works. Better yet, the first economic assessment of this solution is compatible with industrial use and the deformability of the material by this method is sufficient to perform one-off drawing by reducing the number of passes necessary for creating the parts and to work on materials that cannot be cold-drawn. Moreover, this method improves the accuracy and surface appearance of the parts after forming. These studies are being continued. “Today we are focusing our work on the sheet metal / tool tribological aspects in order to more thoroughly study the influence of the heating temperature on the sheet metal, the lubricant and the coating of the tool. Eventually, we intend to start tests on industrial parts”, announced André Maillard, Blanking and Drawing Expert at Cetim.
