Pressure equipment: new references of the European Approval for Materials

Flat products – such as sheet metal, foil and hot- or cold-rolled strips –, forged parts, bars or seamless tubes: these families of parts used in the making of pressure equipment can now be produced from Nickel 201. As a result, a new list of references of the European Approval for Materials (EAM)was published in the Official Journal of the European Union in November 2018. The exact references of this category of material (low-carbon pure Nickel for pressure equipment) are now available on the website of the French Federation of mechanical industries.

EAMis one of the various possible ways of using materials in compliance with the requirements of Directive 2014/68/EU relating to making pressure equipment available on the market (PED). Whatever their types, e.g. boilers, cylinders or breathing apparatuses, percolators, non-nuclear power plants, etc., all items of pressure equipment must comply with the PED so that they can be allowed to move freely within the European Union. The materials used for manufacturing are of the utmost importance and partially condition the safety of such equipment. EAMsallow the use of materials for which there are no harmonised European standards available. EAMsare technical documents which define the specific characteristics of materials intended for repeated use in the manufacturing of pressure equipment. Each data sheet defines the material grade with all these properties and characteristics, a data sheet being issued for each type of product in each material grade. EAMsare issued by authorised and notified bodies specifically designated for this task by each European country. Once they have been published in the Official Journal, these data sheets can be used in the various European Countries.
