NTN robotises NDT on its forging lines
NTN Transmissions Europe has met the challenge of inspecting forgings without human interpretation at a rate of 5 seconds per forging! This unprecedented feat was achieved at its Crézancy plant located in Aisne (France) where it manufactures 60% of the Group's forgings for the European market: tulips and joint housings for motor vehicle transmissions. The project was initiated in 2013: "Many forging companies experience difficulties in automatically checking that the forgings are free of laps, defects caused by metal flow during the hot forging process, explained Antoine Selosse, Site Manager and President of Cetim's professional forging commission. There were two major challenges: achieving inspection speeds that were identical to the forging speeds, up to 700 forgings per hour in our case and using an environmentally friendly system that was not harmful for the operators." As a matter of fact, methods such as penetrant testing or magnetic particle testing may have an impact on the environment of the work stations (magnetic fields, emissions of volatile organic compounds, waste treatment, etc.). Therefore, the industrial manufacturers of the commission launched a study to assess an alternative and automate the demonstrator on site. Antoine Selosse volunteered: "This work demonstrated their performance. However the cycle times still need to be reduced. The collective work is now complete, we are currently working with Cetim to integrate a station to a production line. Eventually, our four forging lines, which produce the 70 tulip and joint housing references, will be equipped with this system. The personnel in question will be assigned to higher added value and less tedious tasks."
