It pays to take part in the standardisation process!

In the mechanical engineering industry, companies who become involved in the standardisation process experience better growth, profitability and export performance than those who do not. These are the findings of the latest BIPE study for Afnor and UNM regarding the economic impact of voluntary standards on mechanical engineering companies. As a matter of fact, in this sector, the companies who take part in the standardisation process have achieved a 23% higher growth in their turnover over the past five years than that of the national average (1.23% growth per year compared with 1%). Participation in standardisation committees also promotes international business, with a growth in export turnover for the last five years that is 20% higher than the national average for all mechanical engineering companies taken together, whether they are involved in standardisation or not. Finally, mechanical engineering companies who take part in international standardisation committees also saw a 20% upturn in their gross operating surplus. Furthermore, whenever the company involved in a single committee experiences a 1% annual increase in its gross operating surplus, this figure increases to 1.25% if the company is involved in an additional committee.

The study carried out by BIPE for Afnor and UNM reviewed many economic aggregators (growth in turnover, export rates, variation of gross operating surpluses, etc.) by comparing them with the databases of direct or indirect participation in French, European and international standardisation committees between 2010 and 2015. It selected 56 NAF codes, assimilated to the mechanical engineering sector by aggregating them into five sub-sectors: dimensional measurement, hardware, industrial machinery, production equipment and hydraulic and pneumatic transmissions.
