Feedback on JIFT 2016

The 2016 edition of International French-Speaking Tribology Days (JIFT) took place from 27 to 29 April 2016 at Énise, in Saint-Étienne (France). This event geared around the "Surface Engineering and Tribology" topic, highlighted industrial solutions in many business sectors, including hot forming (forging, laminating, etc.). A study of the tools’ tribological behaviour including the modelling of tool gradual damage, makes it possible to suggest using high-performance materials for tools.

As regards drawing, non-oily lubrication by surface functionalisation based on organic molecules, an alternative to whole oils, reduces the seizing of stainless steel sheet metal on the tool. Furthermore, replacing chlorinated mineral oils, considered as harmful for the environment, is then possible.

In the medical sector, sensory tribology offers the possibility to diagnose a type of skin disease which before now could only be diagnosed by a dermatologist touching the patient's skin directly. Still in this sector, we know that when someone passes his finger over a surface, vibrations activate the mechanoreceptors of the finger pad. Promising work using sensory tribology demonstrates the link between tactile perception and the vibrations induced by the texture.

In other fields such as energy, aerospace or the agrifood industry, highly-innovative tribological coatings reduce the seizing phenomenon noticed on austenitic stainless steel parts, thereby increasing the component's service life. Still in the mechanical field, seizing is a damaging mode often found on such components as shafts, bearings, pistons, cylinders, bolts and nuts, etc. likely, for instance, to block safety devices or to interrupt the operation of automated lines. Therefore, a test has been developed in accordance with a simple method based on the tribology of seizing surfaces, which provides industrial manufacturers with reliable data concerning the seizing threshold depending on the base material and the anti-seize materials available on the market.
