2016: a good year for mechanical engineering
According to their association, the mechanical industries grew 2% in 2016, to achieve a turnover of 123.8 billion Euros. The mechanical engineering companies also took advantage of the additional depreciation scheme for production equipment which serves as a catalyst for the growth, driven by the general good health of their customers. There was an upturn in all sectors last year, spanning metal processing (+1.1%), mechanical equipment (+2%), including the precision industry (+1.5% in 2016 compared with +0.4% in 2015).
The French mechanical engineering industry, ranked 6 th in the world behind China, United States, Japan, Germany and Italy, also saw a rise in sales of 3.2% on the domestic market and 2.3% across all 28 member countries of the European Union. However, workforce declined slightly to 619,000 employees in 2016. Nevertheless, the mechanical engineering industry is still the first industrial employer in France.
According to the FIM, the recovery of investment initiated in 2015 continued in 2016, inter alia through the sale of industrial robots up by 15% and lift trucks by almost 40%, and the trend should be confirmed in 2017, with an increase of 5% in productive investment demand in the mechanical engineering industry.
