Video Meetings 5.0 – Mobility: “a small step towards greater ambitions!”

When mechanical engineering merges with the world of telecommunications, bolts start talking and railways become safer! This was confirmed in a presentation made by Stéphane Brunet, CEO of Vapérail, during the “Rencontres 5.0”, closing ceremony of Cetim’s 50 th anniversary celebration on 5 July 2016 at Bercy (France). His invention is a smart and communicating bolt.

The adventure began in 2013. “What if a bolt could say when it is loose, that would eliminate the risks of accident”, thought Stéphane Brunet. The young entrepreneur identified two needs: “a need to measure the torque of the bolt and a need for communication, in order to remotely recover this tightening torque information”, he explained. In conjunction with Cetim, the company therefore developed a small sensor able to measure the tightening torque on a nut and paired it with an electronic chip which uses wireless communication to transmit this information to the cloud and then place it on a server. “Two applications are possible: I can either remotely consult the status of the bolts, or, on site, I can monitor the status of the sensors one by one and only focus on possible failure”, specified Stéphane Brunet.

Vapérail’s targets for this innovation are naturally SNCF (French railway company) and the Singapore MRT. And the contract is expected to be significant: for France alone, 100,000 of these “connected bolts” will be needed to secure the network.

This video is one in a 4-part series. Each episode will feature two major players who will explain how industrial manufacturers are rising to the major challenges of the world of tomorrow: Energy, food, health and mobility. Watch the series on our website, in the “videos” section and on the Cetim France YouTube channel.
