Tisseo hoses 50% more durable
Tisseo, the operator of the Toulouse metro system, commissioned Cetim to analyse and test the hydraulic hoses equipping the braking systems of the trains. This proved to be a good idea as their service life has been increased by 50%.
The Toulouse metro trains are designed to be fully overhauled after 800,000 km. “In light of this overhaul, we decided to check the condition of the hydraulic hoses composing the train braking system”, explained Sébastien Duffort, rolling stock and method technician at Tisseo, the operator of the Toulouse metro network. These hoses are made of an elastomer tube and a steel braid. They must normally be replaced at each overhaul, however they have never caused any special problem. The number of failures reported is less than 1%. In that case, why not extend their service life?
“We took 13 hoses from two of our trains as well as 7 new hoses from our stock and entrusted them to Cetim for analysis”, stated Sébastien Duffort. Proof, pressure cycling and burst tests were carried out on the new and used hoses as well as an examination of their condition and that of the unions. With regard to the “elastomer” section, Cetim relied on the services of the Rubber and plastics research and testing laboratory (LRCCP), a member of Cetim’s Carnot Institute network. “At the end of the tests, no significant difference was detected between the characteristics of the new and used hoses”. Further to this investigation, the decision was made to increase the service life of these hoses from 800,000 km to 1,200,000 km.
