Standardisation boosts companies' turnover
Taking part in standardisation work and proper use of standards accelerate companies' growth, this is now confirmed by several international investigations. Turnover gains now represent several billion euros. Here are a few explanations.
Three studies have successively confirmed what standardisation supporters already knew: companies involved in standardisation work have significant competitive advantages. However, the assessment of the gains obtained on both sides of the Channel is a new development.
As a matter of fact, the French national standardisation authority (Afnor) has presented the results of a study conducted in 2015 on a group of 2,000 companies deeply involved in standardisation. The results are very clear: the yearly growth in the turnover figures of those companies involved in standardisation commissions is 20% higher than those of other companies in the same sector. As regard export, the difference in turnover figures is 19%. Why? Because 90% of standards published in France have a European scope. Thus, by complying with those standards, companies are at the right place, at the right time, with the right products. Gains have reached approximately 15 billion euros for French production. For companies the studies mentioned that "the yearly contribution to the added value stemming from the voluntary use of standards amounts to 3 billion euros".
Marketing and financial consequences
The same results have been found in the United Kingdom. According to the study conducted in 2015 on a sale group of 527 companies, the active use of standardisation has caused a rise of 28.4% of the GDP (i.e. 10.27 billion euros). For companies, this has given rise to a 37.4% increase in productivity and a yearly rise of 7.64 billion in exports. 89% of those companies state that standards contribute to optimising compliance with regulations. 73% assert that standards have made them more proficient with environmental issues and 84% have noticed that their reputation has been reinforced.
The challenge of standards
A third study, conducted by Fabrique de l’industrie, a think tank created in October 2011 by UIMM (French union of metallurgy industries), Cercle de l’industrie and GFI (Groupement des fédérations industrielles - grouping of industrial federations and associations), takes stock of the various aspects of regulation and standardisation and boasts the advantages of a well-controlled standardisation. According to the study, "Taking part in standardisation makes it possible to have an influence on the products and services which will be in the market of the future, to promote one's own technologies, to have an influence on stakeholders' behaviour and to take part in negotiations". This memo also highlights the complementarity between rules and standards to structure the market for a high-quality product and service offer.
