Open Innovation: much is still to be done!

In a world of ever increasing competition, industrial manufacturers need to innovate so as to stand out from their competitors, and Open Innovation is one of the means to achieve this. The principle consists in using external web resources, but at the cost of a few risks…

Open Innovation platforms are virtual places of work and data exchange in which any company can find a solution to a technical problem. Although most of the “contributors” are attracted by financial motivations, some of them however try to create a buzz to make a name for themselves.

“The offer is heterogeneous and still lacks maturity. Although it was developed in the United States as from 2001, it only appeared in France in 2008”, says Benoît Duchazeaubeneix from Cetim. Two noteworthy examples of these platforms are ID Storm, an electronic suggestions box used in the scope of collaborative innovation processes and Hypios, a marketplace for solutions where all contributors are competitors.

Using an Open Innovation platform involves a few risks, among which problems of confidentiality and intellectual property. Furthermore, there is still doubt concerning the skills of the “experts” who take part in these platforms: students looking for subsidy, post-graduate students looking for contacts, retired persons, etc. And what about their motivation, considering the fact that remuneration is not guaranteed?

Therefore, in a word: Caution!
