“Le Lab” is exploring SMEs

The goal of Bpifrance’s think tank, called “Le Lab”, is to produce, enhance and circulate knowledge about SMEs.

Since March 2014, the study department at Bpifrance has undergone a total makeover. Now called “Le lab”, it has become an internal think tank whose well defined mission is to gain better insight and understanding of micro businesses, SMEs and intermediate-sized businesses.

Its first task is to produce and enhance knowledge of these businesses. “For various reasons, there has been very little academic research on this topic and we are greatly lacking in qualified data on this category of businesses”, explained Philippe Mutricy, Manager of the assessment, study and forecasting department at Bpifrance.

One of the first initiatives of Le Lab was to give researchers access to its large database on the companies financed by Bpifrance in order to provide them with support material on which to base their research work. A request for proposals was launched on this theme and more than 50 replies were received. A dozen long-term academic study projects (2 to 3 years) will be launched.

At the same time, Le Lab is striving to promote the results of existing research works through partnerships with universities, prestigious schools or other think tanks. Finally, it provides its own contribution with qualitative studies carried out over a few months and other more specific work relating to current topics.

On 28 October 2014, an initial study conducted with Cetim will be presented during a major event organised with Cetim. The study focuses on the French manufacturing SMEs after the manufacturing crisis of 2008. Through the interviews conducted with 30 heads of SMEs, it draws a portrait of these businesses and their managers. Above all, it highlights the fundamental principles that contribute to the success of a manufacturing SME as well as the factors for ensuring sustainable growth.
