JEC World 2019 conferences: mark your calendars !

DuringJEC World2019, Cetim will showcase its experience with composite materials during three conferences. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the latest progress made by Cetim in this field.

This is one of the most eagerly-awaited events for the world’s specialists in composite materials! From 12 thto 14 thMarch, the JECWorld 2019 conference cycle will present the latest innovations made in the composites sector. Three Cetim conferences are on the agenda, bearing on the high-speed production of parts, the various assembly technologies and insert‑less mechanical fasteners.

Series production of windows

On 12 thMarch, from 9:55 to 10:20 a.m., Cetim will present the results of its work as part of the SherlocEuropean project (Structural Health Monitoring, Manufacturing and Repair Technologies for Life Management of Composite Fuselage). Cetim made five demonstrators of windows which were produced at high speed using the Quilted Stratum Process (QSP)thermoforming line. The challenge consisted of making, simultaneously with the window, the fuselage skin in which the window is inserted. The thermoplastic structure and the tool were optimised using Cetim’s Quilted Stratum Design (QSD)software solution.

To guarantee the durability of composite parts, it is essential to make sure that the selected assembly technology is appropriate, especially as the junction between two parts can be a weak point due to significant stress concentration in that area. The difficulty is even greater when it comes to assembling composites of different natures and, even worse, when the materials involved are hybrid materials (metal/composite laminates). The conference which will take place on 12 thMarch from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. will present, amongst other topics, a methodology to select the suitable assembly technology (bonding, riveting, etc.) depending on the nature of the materials of the parts to be assembled.

The bolting of composite parts requires the installation, in the composite material, of a metal insert which may be either the male or female part of the fastener. Even if the insert does not weaken the part, it has a significant drawback in that it is expensive in terms of time and manufacturing cost. Moreover, repairs can be complex, as the insert is either crimped or bonded. However, this is not the only option! On 13 thMarch, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., during its third conference, Cetim will present a solution to design and compute an insert-less bolted assembly.

Finally, on 14 thMarch, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to attend a round table discussion on “French excellence in composites: a growing demand for advanced composites”with the leading companies of the composites industry and with Daniel Richet, Cetim’s Chief Executive Officer.
