Fraunhofer – Carnot Cetim alliance: In-line inspection of steels with Magnus
Magnus, jointly developed by the Fraunhofer Institute (IZPF) and the Carnot institute, Cetim, is a non-contact solution for analysing high resistance steels upon output from the rolling mills. It is an easy-to-use, efficient and economical method that associates electromagnetic and ultrasonic inspections.
Magnus was developed in partnership by the Fraunhofer institute for non-destructive testing (IZPF) in Sarrebruck and Cetim. It is used to quickly analyse the properties of materials before transformation. In France, the project received funding from the ANR (French national research agency) as part of the collaborative research work carried out between the Carnot institutes and the Fraunhofer institutes. Magnus combines two analysis methods: micro-magnetism and ultrasounds. Micro-magnetism helps to determine various properties such as hardness and tensile strength and provides information on the internal stress state while ultrasonic inspection reveals the material’s texture. This information is used to control the deformation process, for instance, during shaping of the material by deep drawing, a process used to transform a flat metal sheet into a hollow shape (whether complex or not). When applied to high-resistance steels before their transformation, the contact-free method makes it possible to efficiently perform these analyses in a single operation.
