Castor simulates Ecovrac tankers

Through Castor, a unique simulation software, Ecovrac has discovered how to get the prototype of a new pressurised tanker right the first time and obtain its certification.

Ecovrac is faced with a twofold challenge for every new innovation, i.e. improving its products and complying with the recommendations of the French Code for construction of unfired pressure vessels (Codap). Its new product, a flour transport tanker, must undergo inspection by a certification body given that its booster compressor, designed to evacuate the white powder, can produce a pressure of 0.8 bar.

“As we did not possess simulation tools that were powerful enough to verify our calculations, we called on Cetim to simulate the activity of the tanker once the booster compressor is in action”, explained Arnaud Bacrot, manager of the Ecovrac design office. Accordingly, a constructive dialogue was established between Ecovrac and Cetim’s experts, specialised in the Castor software. Castor, a software application designed and developed by Cetim, dimensions pressure equipment by taking into account external data (wind, earthquake, etc.) and Codap, ASME and EN 13445 recommendations.

“Through the ongoing and pragmatic communication between both parties, we were able to advance quickly”, added Arnaud Bacrot. Therefore, simulation immediately proved to be a possible improvement enabling the prototype to successfully complete the certification stage.
