Additive manufacturing: strong actions to place France amongst the top 5 worldwide
In line with the initiative spearheaded by the French 3D printing ecosystem, under the leadership of the Industry of the Future Alliance, the Government has just announced its support for several strong initiatives in this area. The goal is to rank France amongst the Top 5 worldwide!
France intends to become a global benchmark for additive manufacturing. Its goal is to move up from seventh place to fifth worldwide in terms of installed industrial machines. To this end, several major actions have been initiated and officially supported by the Secretary of State for Industry, Digital Technology and Innovation, Christophe Sirugue.
Funding for investments
With a view to supporting companies in the assessment and implementation of these technologies, Symop, CEA and Cetim have launched an operation called “3D Start PME”, based on the “RobotstartPME” programme, which helps SMEs to acquire their first robot. With a funding of 600,000 Euros as part of the Investments of the Future programme, this scheme was launched experimentally during the second quarter of 2017 for a period of one year and will then be implemented on a large scale as of 2018.
To support their investments, companies can benefit from “Industry of the Future” loans under the programme recently launched by BPIfrance with a budget of one billion Euros, as well as the accelerated depreciation scheme established by the Government. Up until 31 December 2017, companies are able to depreciate a new 3D printer over two years rather than five. Finally, the third phase of the Investments of the Future (PIA3) continues to support R&D projects in additive manufacturing, by following the roadmap being established within the Industry of the Future Alliance (AIF). These operations must help to increase the percentage of industrial machines installed on the French territory from 3 to 9%.
Promoting R&D and training
In its effort to become a global benchmark for additive manufacturing, France has also equipped itself with a coordinated network of platforms intended to support research, the integration and the distribution of these technologies to companies. In addition to the Paris region with the Additive Factory Hub of Saclay, four other major regions are involved: Pays de la Loire, Grand Est, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Occitanie. These federated platform projects are eligible for the PIAVE – sector scheme, with a 500 million Euro budget from the PIA3.
Finally, to help industrial manufacturers increase the skills of their workforce, the Government has entrusted AIF with establishing a “reference system” of additive manufacturing training skills across the nation. Within this context, Cetim, in partnership with Cetim-Certec, its associated centre, has already begun to develop a full training programme dedicated to additive manufacturing which covers the entire value chain.
